Woking Street Angels

Churches across Woking are working together to set up Woking Street Angels to provide care for people in the town centre as pubs and clubs close.

Street Angels or similar programmes have been springing up across the UK over the last 6 years.  Street Angels are adult volunteers (over 18s), usually from local churches, who care and provide practical support for the people, usually on Friday and/or Saturday nights, who use the night clubs and other leisure and entertainment venues in town centres.  Their calming presence on the streets late at night makes a really positive impact on crime and antisocial behaviour in town centres and they make a real difference to many people, very often young people who have had too much to drink.  For more details see separate ‘Street Angels – Mission and Values’ statement.

Street Angels currently operate in Guildford and Camberley and a few people, from several different Woking Churches, have come together with the vision and enthusiasm to set up Street Angels in Woking.

Currently we are in the process of recruiting volunteers from Churches - please apply by 8 Nov 10.  All volunteers will be interviewed and acceptance will be subject to CRB and reference checks and attending the training sessions in January and February 2011.  There will be a commissioning service on Sunday evening, 13 February 2011 and we will be 'on the streets' from Friday, 18 February 2011.

We have appointed a part-time co-ordinator, who will start work on 1 December 2010.   Exciting times for Woking and for Street Angels.
